Classes of the Nordic region

According to our countrys rule books there are around ten classes in each of our active Flat track countrys Sweden, Norway and Finland with only small differences. The foundation is the same thanks to cooperation in between thoose three countrys. But in spite of the rule books every race promoter are allowed to change classes or make groups of several. They are also allowed to add a non excisting class if they find it benfitial for the riders or the event. We will give you a brief picture of what to expect and whats not.

Since the writer are most familiar with the Swedish Svemo sanctioned rule book this is where we start.

In sweden we have 13 classes
UNGDOM/YOUTH: All kinds of bikes within the specifikation of the other classes except that there is a maximun of 250 cc. From 14 years and up. Flat Track tyre 18” or 19” recommended. Killswitch and rear brake are mandatory.

JUNIOR: All kinds of bikes within the specifikation of the other classes. 15 – 18 years. Flat Track tyre 18” or 19” recommended. Killswitch and rear brake are mandatory.

NEWBIE: A class for the very beginner without any experience at all. Use your roadbike but cover your lights, dismount front brake, mirrors bags etc. All tyres except cross/endore or spikes are allowed. Newbie is a one time start for you to begin in your own phase and next race you are off to Rookie.

ROOKIE CLASS: where you can learn and improve your moves on your flat track bike, cut of and a shark fin installed. Rookie class doesn’t have an imposition on cubic inches. If you ride very well in Rookie you can be asked to join another suitable Class.

AMATEUR CLASS: 450cc MX bikes, Thunderbikes even Hooligans, Real Deal and Modern Classics True Gold and Supergirls. This class is Open for the riders that know how to handle the bike, with race experince but in between a rookie and a pro rider.

PRO/DT X: Modified Cross/Enduro bikes with two- or four stroke engines. Two stroke max 250cc, four stroke max 450cc. Flat Track tyres 19” are mandatory Front brake are not allowed rearbrake and killswitch are mandatory No electronic devices reachable on the bar are allowed.

ELECTRIC: Rides in the class with equally equipped bikes with cumbustion engines.

VINTAGE TRUE GOLD: Old Triumph’s, BSA’s, Astro Bultaco’s, Harley XR, WR, WLA’s etc. If your engine is OHC, which means overhead camshaft type, that is a no go in Vintage Old Gold class. If you are not sure send us a mail including a photo. You don’t need the proper flat track tyres or 19″ wheels. This class might be divided in more age-specific groups. -1959. Emergency stop / kill switches are recommended but not mandatory in this class.

VINTAGE REAL DEAL: Old purpose built flat track rides 1960 – 1979. Emergency stop / kill switches are mandatory in this class.

VINTAGE MODERN CLASSICS: Year of manufacture up to 1985. Ideally flat track tires (18 “or 19” allowed, not mandatory, no knobblies allowed). Emergency stop / kill switches are mandatory in this class.

THUNDERBIKE OPEN: 500cc and above. Flat Track tire 18 ” or 19” preferable but not a rule, mx/enduro, knobblies or spikes are not allowed. No front brake are allowed, rear brake are mandatory. Emergency stop / kill switches are mandatory in this class.

HOOLIGAN CLASS: All age factory built twins originally above 750cc with stock main frame (sub-frame may be modified) and little mods as a cut of, unplugged front brake, ideally on flat track tyres (but not essential) no knobblies. Emergency stop / kill switches are mandatory in this class.

SUPERGIRL: Ladies only all specs on bikes above except ROOKIE/NEWBIE, Emergency stop / kill switches are mandatory in this class.

In Norway the have the same but also offer a range of classes for Juniors from 9 years old.

Finland has the same classes but also offers several classes for juniors from 8 years old.

Different organizers offers different ways and in Viking cup they dont offer Youth, Newbie or Supergirl. The two rounds in Finland offers two extra junior classes, and the Pro class is open to all riders and bikes within the rulebook except Newbie and Rookie. They also added a Dash for Cash this year.

In Swedish flat track cup they offer 450 pro, Amateur, Thunderbike, Hooligan, Vintage Modern Classic and they made one class for both True Gold and Real Deal, Rookie and a junior only show.

In Norway they only offer one race this year and its Hells Race at Lunner track outside Oslo. Classes you can sign up for is Pro Open, Vintage, Hooligan, Amateur, Thunderbike, Supergirl and they also added Adventure and 3G2T which is vintage two stroke class.

In Finland the run their own championship wich usually only offers a Pro 450 but this year they reached out to Viking Cup administrators and the second round will be at Kauhajoki which also is the second round of Viking Cup. By that they Open up their official Championship and all Pro Riders are able to race in the championship at the same terms as in Viking Cup.
